The Complete Thobe Bag Guide: Sizes, Materials & Why Length Matters

A thobe is longer than a suit. That one fact changes everything about the bag.

Standard suit bags run 100–110 cm inside. A thobe runs 135–160 cm. Put a thobe in a standard bag, and 30–55 cm of hem sits in open air. It collects dust on the rack, picks up scuffs in a car boot, and does exactly what a cover is supposed to prevent.

Why a Standard Suit Bag Won’t Cover a Thobe

Do the arithmetic. A standard bag has roughly 105 cm of usable interior. A 60-inch thobe measures 152 cm on the hanger. The difference — about 45 cm — hangs in the open.

That exposed hem picks up:

• Dust from storage racks and warehouse floors.
• Scuffs from car boots, airport belts, and luggage trolleys.
• Creases where the hem folds against the bag bottom.

For a formal garment that cost its owner several hundred dollars, that’s a returns conversation you don’t want. For retailers and tailors, it’s a complaint that follows you.

Length is not a “premium option” for thobes. It’s the spec.

One more measurement buyers forget: the hanger. Most thobes hang from a sewn-in loop or a wooden hanger with a 15–20 cm drop. A bag cut tight to the garment length leaves no room for that drop, so the shoulders bunch up. We size the bag from the hook, not from the collar.

Thobe Lengths in Inches and Centimetres: The Numbers

Thobe sizes are quoted in inches in the Gulf, and the range is tighter than you’d think:

Most men wear 57–60 inches. Taller orders run 60–62.

Here’s the part people miss: the bag must be longer than the garment. We add 10–15 cm so the hem never sits against the bottom seam when zipped. So:

• 54–57 inch thobe → 155 cm bag
• 60 inch thobe → 165 cm bag
• 62 inch thobe or abaya → 175–180 cm bag

What Fabric Stands Up to Travel and Storage

Thobe bags live a harder life than suit bags. They get packed for travel, thrown in car boots, and hung in shared wardrobes. The fabric has to match the job.

• Non-woven at 100 gsm or above. The 60–80 gsm used for everyday suits is too light. A 100 gsm bag holds its shape and survives the trips. If you need a lighter-duty cover, our suit covers range covers that ground.
• Dark colours. Black, deep navy, coffee brown. Dust shows less, and the palette suits the formal character of the garment. Light bags come back grey at the bottom, and customers notice.
• A laminated option. A PEVA coating makes the bag water-resistant. Popular with buyers who travel with the thobe rather than store it.
• A recycled option. RPET with GRS certification, for brands that report sustainability to retailers.

Structure matters as much as weight. A thobe bag needs a reinforced top seam — the fabric takes the full weight of the garment on the hanger hook, and that’s where cheap bags tear first. We double-stitch the top panel and add a small internal reinforcement patch on all long bags.

One more habit worth copying from our Gulf customers: they test the bag with a real garment before the first bulk run. A thobe on a hanger, zipped inside, carried across the shop. It takes ten minutes and catches every sizing mistake early.

Foil Logos and Metal Zippers: What Buyers in the Gulf Ask For

The design requests we get from Gulf buyers are consistent, so we’ve standardised around them:

• Gold foil stamping on black. The most requested combo we ship to the region. Flat, metallic, and formal in a way screen print ink isn’t.
• Metal zippers, not plastic. Buyers say metal lasts longer and feels right on a formal cover. We use a brass-finish metal zip as standard on long bags.
• A hanger opening. A slit at the top so the bag hangs on a rail hook without unzipping. Small detail, big difference on a busy rack.
• A webbing handle on the top seam, so the bag carries like a piece of luggage.

Colour matching matters here more than anywhere. “Gold” foil comes in twenty shades, from bright yellow-gold to antique bronze. Send us a Pantone or a sample of the trim used on the garment, and we’ll match the foil to it. We keep that reference on file for reorders.

Abayas Need the Long Version Too

The same problem hits women’s formal wear, harder.

An abaya runs 150–180 cm, and floor-length styles go further. A standard suit bag doesn’t come close. Same grey hem, same complaints, same lost sales.

The fix is the same bag, in the long sizes:

• 175–180 cm covers most abayas.
• Dark colours again. Black and deep navy are the standard palette for the garment itself.
• One design, two sizes. Most of our buyers order men’s thobe bags and women’s abaya covers in the same run — same logo, same foil, same zipper, two lengths. It keeps the MOQ manageable and the branding identical.

What Buyers Get Wrong When Ordering Thobe Bags

Four mistakes we see repeat:

• Ordering the standard 105 cm bag. It’s cheaper and it’s in stock everywhere. It’s also 45 cm too short. The saving disappears in returns.
• Light colours. A white or beige bag looks fine in the catalogue and grey after two months on a rack.
• Plastic zippers. They jam, they split, and they cheapen the whole product. On a formal cover, metal is the baseline.
• Forgetting the hanger opening. The customer ends up unzipping the full length of the bag just to hang it. Annoying, every single time.

None of these are hard to fix at the factory. They’re hard to fix after the container lands.
