Garment Bags for Weddings: Protecting Gowns and Suits
A bridal gown arrives at the shop in a cardboard tube, wrinkled at the waist, beads tangled in the lining. We have seen it a hundred times. The dress survived the fitting room, the alterations, and the deposit. It did not survive the van.
The fix is boring and cheap: a proper garment bag. This guide covers what wedding shops, hotels, and ateliers actually need — sizes, materials, and the details that keep a $2,000 gown presentable until the bride walks out the door.
How long is a wedding dress, really?
You cannot order bridal bags by guesswork. Measure the gown flat, from shoulder seam to hem. Real numbers:
- A-line and sheath gowns: 150-155cm
- Ball gowns and mermaid cuts: 160-165cm
- Gowns with a chapel train: 170-190cm, sometimes more
- Groom’s suit: 110-120cm
- Bridesmaid dresses: 125-135cm
That is why the same order usually carries three bag sizes. One size fits none.
Measure with the train folded up or removed, not trailing on the floor. Add 5cm of clearance. Then add the bag’s own flap, the same way we do for custom suit covers.
Three sizes for one wedding order
Bridal shops order by the set. Here is the typical breakdown we ship:

The 160cm bag is the workhorse. We stock it in white and ivory, and the difference between the two is not cosmetic — ivory hides the yellowing that fluorescent shop lights cause on white fabric over six months.
What the bag has to survive
A wedding garment bag does three jobs. Name all three before you pick the fabric:
- Transport: van to venue, courier to the airport, checked luggage on a 12-hour flight.
- Storage: hanging in the shop for weeks before the date.
- Display: hanging on a rack where the bride’s mother inspects it.
Transport is the brutal one. Bags get thrown, stacked, and parked in trunks in July heat. That is why we use 80-100gsm nonwoven for wedding bags, not the 60gsm used for home closet covers.
Nonwoven, PEVA, or both?
For bridal, white spunbond nonwoven at 80-100gsm is the safe default. It breathes, which matters for weeks of storage, and it takes silkscreen logos without puckering.
PEVA transparent bags have one job: show the gown on the rack. Brides want to see the dress before they ask the price. We build PEVA windows into nonwoven bags — a 25x35cm clear panel at chest height — and that combination outsells either material alone.
Skip full PEVA for gowns in storage. It does not breathe, condensation forms inside, and beads and sequins glue themselves to the film. We have seen the aftermath.
RPET recycled nonwoven, GRS-certified, is the version hotel and resort brands ask for. Same weight, same sewing, about 8-12% more per bag. If the brand reports sustainability, that is the line item they want on the invoice.
The window question
Buyers argue about windows more than any other spec. Our advice: put the window at the top third of the bag, where the bodice sits. Nobody needs to see the skirt through the plastic.
Window sizes we cut most:
- 20x30cm for suits and shorter dresses
- 25x35cm for gowns, centered on the bodice
- Full-front PEVA only for display-only lines that ship the same day
Stitch the window on three sides, open at the bottom, so the film can flex when the bag is folded. Glued windows crack in transit. We stopped using glue years ago.
The hanger and the hook
A gown weighs more than a suit. A beaded 160cm gown can run 3-4kg, and it all hangs from the top seam of the bag.
We reinforce the hanger opening with a double stitch and a 5cm gusset at the hook. The hook itself is metal, coated, so it does not scratch the rack. If the shop uses round bars, ask for the hook opening sized to your bar — 2cm of difference changes how the bag hangs.
Printing your name on the bag
Every bridal shop that orders from us prints its name. It is the cheapest advertising in the business: the bag travels to the venue, the hotel room, the photographer’s studio.
- Silk-screen: one to three colors, best value on white nonwoven
- Hot stamping: gold or silver foil for the atelier look
- Embroidery: only on fabric bags, not nonwoven
Logo width 10-15cm, chest height, plus the back panel if the budget allows. Our screen team hits about 300 bags an hour, so printing adds almost nothing to the lead time.
How we pack and ship
Flat-folded, 50 bags per carton for the 160cm size (they are long), 100 per carton for the 115cm size. Mixed sizes in one carton are fine. Sample takes 7 days; bulk runs 20-30 days after approval. MOQ is 500 pieces total, not per size — that matters when a shop needs 200 gown bags and 300 suit bags.
Terms are FOB, CIF, or DDP. We quote each honestly, because freight on long cartons is not the same as short ones. A 40HQ fits roughly 1,900 cartons of 160cm bags if you are costing out a full container.
The small details that close the sale
Three details separate a bag a shop reorders from one it curses:
- Two-way zipper, so the bag opens from either end on a tight rack
- A dust flap inside the zipper, so metal never touches the gown
- A printed size label on the outside, so staff find the right dress at 6pm on a Saturday
Each one costs cents. Each one is in every sample we send.
Why shops bundle the set
The buyers who reorder treat the wedding bag as a three-piece system, not a single item. Gown bag, suit bag, accessories bag — printed with the same logo, cut from the same roll. It costs them a few cents more per set and sells the “we handle everything” story at the counter.
Bundle pricing keeps the math simple: 500 pieces total MOQ, any mix of the three sizes. A shop that needs 250 gown bags, 150 suit bags, and 100 veil bags gets one price, one lead time, one carton. We have shipped that exact split more times than we can count.
The other reason to bundle is the venue. Hotels ask for the full set when a couple books the suite — the groom’s suit arrives in the same bag family as the dress. When the bags match, the photos do too.
